(English
Version) Sarmiento Domingo Faustino Sarmiento was born in Argentina, in the city of Carrascal, Province of San Juan, February 15th 1811, and passed away on Asuncion, Paraguay, September 11th 1888. Writer, statesman, educator, he is remembered as the main promoter of the educative system in Argentina. He was governor of his natal province between 1862 and 1864. He became President of Argentina in 1868, and stayed until 1874. His concern about education and culture of the argentina people translated in important contributions for the expansion and improvement of the public teaching system in general, and teaching in particular. In 1943, 55 years after his death, the Interamerican Conference of Education, united in Panama, and integrated by educators from all Amercia, established september 11th as Teacher's Day in all the american continent, considering that "no date is more appropiate to celebrate teacher's day than september 11th, day in which Domingo Faustino Sarmiento passed to inmortality."
